This year marks the 24th consecutive year for the Glenwood Hot Springs Higher Education Scholarship. The resort’s Board of Directors established the scholarship in 1995 to acknowledge the role employees play in the success of the hot springs resort and to support the value of higher education. The scholarship, which is open to employees and their family members, helps local residents attain their dreams through advanced learning at four-year universities, community colleges and trade schools. The scholarship totals $10,000; it is split between the recipients and pro-rated per semester over the course of their education. This year’s winners are Gisley Torres, Christina Matzl and Charlotte Olejniczak.

The scholarship winners received a letter of congratulations from John Bosco, Glenwood Hot Springs Resort Chief Operations Officer and Vice President. “All of the recipients of the Higher Education Scholarship are to be commended for dedication to both their work and their dreams,” Bosco said. “On behalf of Glenwood Hot Springs, I wish them the best success in their future studies.”

Gisley Torres is a Glenwood Springs High School senior. She will receive a total gift of $4,000. Gisley is the daughter of Mario Torres and Maria Membreño of Glenwood Springs. Charlotte Olejniczak is a Coal Ridge High School senior. She will receive a total gift of $4,000. Charlotte is the daughter of Michele Olejniczak and Elizabeth Amlie of New Castle. In addition to an outstanding student, Charlotte is also hard working in the workforce. She holds down three jobs, including as a lifeguard at the Hot Springs Pool where she has been promoted to a leadership position. She is also a volunteer ski patroller at Sunlight Mountain Resort and has volunteered on a medical mission to Mexico. In the fall, Charlotte will be attending Colorado Mountain College to earn her Emergency Medical Technician certification and then will pursue a degree in the school’s prestigious nursing program.

Christina Matzl is the wife of Pool Manager Steve Matzl. A resident of New Castle, she is the mother of two boys, ages five and seven. With her youngest ready to attend kindergarten, Christina is looking forward to pursuing a new career path. She attained her Associates of Arts and Science degree from the University of Wisconsin Colleges Baraboo/Sauk County Campus where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. In the fall she will attend Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley Campus where she plans to study sustainability. Christina will receive a total award of $2,000.
